Antique Fireback

This true monumental antique fireback "plaque de cheminee" was made between 1680-1700 at the Saint-Claire foundry in Villerupt, Lorraine - France owned by M Beguinet and his wife. The foundry closed in 1708.
Doctor Coliez of Longwy, a collector of antiquities, had 5 signed firebacks from this foundry. Several others have surfaced over the years like this one.
The motto "FLAMES SONT FLEURS OU JE REPREN MA VIE" translates as "FLAMES ARE THE FLOWERS WHERE I RETAKE MY LIFE".
It is adorned with a phoenix which is starting to burn in an elegant arabesque decoration composed of flowers and acanthus leaves. It is also lightened up with the words "Flames sont fleurs ou je repren ma vie" in old French, meaning in English : Flammes are the flowers where I reborn, being an echo to the legend saying that the phoenix is able to return to life after being burnt.
